Actually, that’s a tomatillo in the picture. But centuries ago this fruit was known as the tomatl. That’s no typo: ‘-atl’ is a common word-ending in Nahuatl, the ancient language of the Aztecs of central Mexico.

But beware: ‘-atl’ is only used for singular, non-possessive forms of nouns. If you want the plural (‘tomatoes’), the word changes to tomameh. …
